Owner / Operator Of Carter's Store For 35 Years

Daniel Lee "D.L." Carter II, 79, of 1207 Staunton Street, Selma, died early Friday morning, January 23, 2009, in Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor.

He was born in Selma, Virginia on February 12, 1929, a son of the late Lorenzo Maynard Carter, Sr. and Mary Anderson Carter.

He was the retired owner / operator of CarterŐs Store in Selma, which he operated for 35 years until its closing in 1988.

He was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church, and a charter member of the Selma Volunteer Fire Department.

He had a great love of fishing, hunting and being with his family. He was a faithful fan of the Washington Redskins, and served in the United States Navy from 1950 until 1954.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanne Anne Smith Carter of Selma; a son, Daniel Lee "Danny" Carter, III and his wife, Erin of Clifton Forge; sisters: Mildred Carter Pullen of Clifton Forge and Virginia Carter Miller and husband, Harmon of Selma; sister-in-law, Margaret Gleason Carter of Selma; 3 grandchildren: Daniel Lee Carter, IV, William A. Carter and Raeann Nicole Carter; a number of nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Rita Totten and husband, Gail and Barbara Tucker and husband, Tommy.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Helen Carter Armentrout; a brother, Lorenzo Maynard "Bud" Carter, Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Robert "Bob" Pullen.

In keeping with his wishes, his body will be cremated. There will be no services at this time. Friends may call at the residence of 1207 Staunton Street, Selma at any time. The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. Carter's name to the Selma Volunteer Fire Department, Selma, Virginia 24474.

Arrangements are being handled by The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia.
