World War II Veteran Was Retired From W&L Print Shop

Hunter Gordon McCoy, 82, of Lexington, died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

He was born May 18, 1926 in Lexington, a son of the late Richard H. McCoy, Sr. and Myrtle Hall McCoy.

He was retired from W & L Print Shop.

He was a World War II veteran, where he earned a bronze star.

He served as Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout troops in Waynesboro, Lexington, Richmond and Mechanicsville, VA, and Washington, MO.

Mr. McCoy was one of the first Hunter Education instructors and was the recipient of several awards for hunter safety education. He was an NRA and 4-H Firearms instructor for many years. He was an active member of Kerrs Creek Ruritan Club and was past district governor; a founder of Washington & Lee University Outing Club; and past president of Rockbridge Area Forestry and Wildlife Association.

Mr. McCoy loved the outdoors and for years raised and trained English Setters.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel McCoy; children, H. Gordon McCoy, Jr. of Buchanan, Edwin Lee McCoy and wife, Teri of Buchanan, and James M. McCoy and wife, Teresa of Lexington; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 - 7 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the home of James McCoy, 484 Waterloo Dr., approximately 8 miles west off of Midland Trail.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Rockbridge JAKES program, 1626 Jacktown Road, Lexington, VA 24450. Services will be private.

Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
