Obituary for Barbara Showalter Michie Barbara Showalter Michie
Former Nursing Assistant Was Known As "Nannie Honey"

Barbara Showalter Michie, affectionately known as "Nannie Honey", of 911 Donovan Street, Selma, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville at the age of 75.

She was born September 17, 1933 in Iron Gate, Virginia, a daughter of the late Elbie Ruben Showalter and Hallie Harris Showalter.

She was a nursing assistant for many years at the former Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital and Alleghany Regional Hospital.

She was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hamilton Michie in 2002; two daughters, Barbara "Bobbi" Michie Powell and Robin Rae Michie; and six sisters and brothers: Lorraine Hocker, Bob Showalter, infant sister, Jacqueline Showalter, Alene Taylor, Ruben Showalter, Jr., and Ryles Randolph "Butch" Showalter.

She is survived by two daughters, Shannon Michie Downey and husband, Randy of Selma and Kathy Michie Brown and husband, Ronnie of Chesterfield; a son, Michael Powers "Mike" Michie and wife, Debbie of Clifton Forge; a daughter-in-law, Shelly Johnson Michie; two sisters, Jean Brooks and husband, Raymond of Richmond and Hallie "Poodle" Burks of Alexandria; a sister-in-law, Sally Cary Showalter of Clifton Forge; four grandchildren: Shawn Michael Michie, Ashley Brooke Michie, Zachary Randolph Downey and wife, Jennifer, and Kasey Carter Brown; two great grandchildren, Nathaniel Joseph Michie and Kaidence Marie Nicely; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Michael Warren and Reverend Gerry Burkholder officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Epworth United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 190, Selma, Virginia 24474 or to the Alleghany Humane Society, 304 Karnes Road, Low Moor, VA 24457.
