Clifton Forge Attorney Dies At Age 80

Dueward Houston "Scoop" Scott Jr., 80, of 417 Brussels Street, Clifton Forge, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at The Golden Living Center, Clifton Forge.

Born December 22, 1928 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, he was a son of the late Dueward Houston Scott, Sr. and Mary Nair Scott.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a graduate of Elon College and the T.C. Williams Law School at the University of Richmond.

He was a Commonwealth Attorney for the former City of Clifton Forge and practiced law in this area for over fifty years.

He was a member of the #1065 B.P.O.E. and the Clifton Forge Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dueward H. Scott, III ,and a grandson, Phillip Hogan.

He is survived by a son, Houston Miller Scott of Richmond, three daughters: Stephanie Scott of Hinton, WV, Shawn Scott Newton and husband, John of Richmond, and Cameron Nair Scott of New Smyrna Beach, FL; four grandchildren: Mary Hogan, Katie Scott, Andy Scott, and Trey Newton; and many friends including his best friend, Pat Haymaker of Clifton Forge and her family; Sheryl Hall and husband, Greg of Fincastle, Karen Carter and husband, Steve of Afton, Kathy Lee and husband, Chuck of Clifton Forge, and Thomas Haymaker and wife, Amy of Clifton Forge.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Clifton Forge Elks Lodge # 1065 B.P.O.E., 306 E. Ridgeway Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422, the Clifton Forge Public Library (please make in honor of Dueward H. Scott, Jr.) 535 Church Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422, or to the Clifton Forge Food Pantry, P.O. Box 361, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
