Burlington Retiree Was Famous For His Home-Baked Pies

Robert Lewis Austin, 82, died Sunday, February 16, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Vivian Henson Austin, and his wife of 5 years, Edith Sorrels Austin.

He is survived by children: Robert Austin, Jr., Linda and Garry Floyd of Buena Vista; Helen and Dick Bailey of Moneta, Virginia; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; step-children, Pam and Phil Ragland, Carolyn and Jerry Topping, Ronnie and Maddie Green, all of Buena Vista; one brother, Ike Austin of Buena Vista; sisters: Elsie Flint of Glasgow, Esther Orange and Martha Edwards of Roanoke, and Roberta Wilson of Winter Haven, Florida.

Mr. Austin served in the U.S. Navy.

He retired from Burlington Industries after 40 years of service.

He a member of First Brethren Church in Buena Vista.

He enjoyed music and social events where he was famous for his home-baked pies. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed biking, fishing, hunting, gardening. Other interests included woodworking, and in recent years, bowling in the seniors league.

The funeral will be conducted by Pastor Christian Becker and Rev. Bill Hepler at Bolling Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel, Wednesday, February 18, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling Grose & Lotts Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Buena Vista, Virginia.
