Obituary for Marvin Harry Lockhart, Sr. Marvin Harry Lockhart, Sr.
US Navy Veteran Was Dunlap High School Valedictorian

Marvin Harry Lockhart, Sr., age 84, of 411 Commerce Avenue, Iron Gate, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at his residence.

His family was by his side.

Born January 31, 1925 in Sweet Chalybeate, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Charlie and Emma Lockhart.

He was valedictorian of the class of 1947 at Dunlap High School.

He served in the United States Navy on the USS Savannah, the USS Louisville, and the USS Tangier in World War II.

He was employed at the old weaving mill in Covington, and retired from the H.O. Canfield Rubber Plant in Iron Gate as a supervisor.

He was a member and elder of Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Marvin loved spending time with his family. In previous years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. When his health no longer permitted him to attend church, he kept his faith in Jesus strong. Each day, he read his Bible and prayed. Several times, he read his Bible from beginning to end. He also enjoyed listening to sermons and hymns on tape.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was predeceased in death by four brothers, one sister, and a son-in-law, Kevin Aldridge, who passed away on December 26, 2008.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife and caregiver of sixty-one years, Pansy Reynolds Lockhart; a son, Marvin H. Lockhart, Jr. and his wife, Diane of Covington; three daughters: Joyce Marlene Simpson and husband, Tony of Verona, Kathy Jean Nicely and husband, Chazy (Joe) of Iron Gate, and Tammy Leigh Aldridge of Clifton Forge; a sister, Betty Reed of Madison Heights; a brother, Paul Lockhart and wife, Snowa of Salem; a brother-in-law, Cecil Reynolds and wife, Erlene of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Sue Holmes of Staunton; six grandchildren: David Lockhart, Brian Simpson, Travis Simpson and wife, Erin, Jonathon Aldridge, Amanda Pauley, and Allison Aldridge; a special cousin Catherine Humphries; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Louis Dodd officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Pallbearers will be Jonathon Aldridge, Brian Simpson, Travis Simpson, David Lockhart, Chazy (Joe) Nicely, Todd Crance, Keith Reynolds, Doug Lockhart, and Ronnie Dowd. The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon prior to the service, from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 411 Commerce Ave, Iron Gate, VA. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church, C/O Marilyn Bliss, P.O. Box 69, Iron Gate, VA 24448 or to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
