James Robert Tichenor III, 70, of Lexington, Va., died Tuesday, May 12, 2009.

He was born May 30, 1938, a son of the late James Robert Tichenor Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Shawler Tichenor.

James graduated from West Point in 1960, and earned his Master's in nuclear physics from Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey California.

He also retired from the United States Army, and was founder and president of Rockbridge Area Information Line.

James also was a member of the Rockbridge Planning Commission for eight years, president of Rockbridge County Electoral Board, and he and his wife participated in a visioning effort called "Imagine Rockbridge."

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Tichenor, of Lexington; his children, Mark Owen Tichenor and wife, Lisa, of Ohio; Dana Lynn Hinkle and husband, Bob, of Texas; and Eric Russell Tichenor and wife, Marie, of New Jersey; five grandchildren; a sister, Anne Schaller and husband, Art, of Vermont; and an extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May, 16, 2009, at St. Paul's Anglican Church, on the corner of Nelson and Davidson Streets, with the Rev. Canon Shields officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory, Lexington, Va.
