Obituary for Robert Bernard "Bernie" Gibson, Sr. Robert Bernard "Bernie" Gibson, Sr.
Retired CSX Brakesman Was Alleghany County Native

Robert Bernard "Bernie" Gibson, Sr. age 76, of The Golden Living Center, Clifton Forge, and formerly of 924 Commercial Street, Clifton Forge, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor.

Born November 25, 1932 in Alleghany County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Willie Lewis Gibson, Sr. and Naomi Howard Gibson.

He was a retired yard brakeman for CSX Transportation and served in the Virginia Army National Guard.

He was a member of the Clifton Forge Moose Lodge # 1683 and was a member of Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, but attended Lone Star Advent Christian Church.

He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and loved bluegrass music.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Gloria Kathleen Reynolds Gibson in February of 2006; two brothers, Richard Arnold Gibson and Charley Herman Gibson; two sisters, Evelyn Jane Gibson Childs and Eleanor Jean Gibson Knidt; a grandson, Nathan Daniel Hagler; and two great grandchildren, Destiny Faith Christman and Chase O'Rion Boyd.

He is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Jean "Becky" Gibson Laxton and husband, Allen of Newport News; Rita Kay Gibson of Four Oaks, NC; and Barbara Gayle Gibson Hagler and husband, Thomas of Pocomoke City, MD; two sons, Robert B. "Bernie" Gibson, Jr. of Clifton Forge and Casey Gibson and wife, Kim of Covington; four sisters: Louis Mildred Gibson Ford of Charleston, WV, Margaret Ester Gibson Dame and husband, Bruce of Selma, Catherine Marie Gibson VanNess of Clifton Forge, and Naomi JoAnne Gibson Scobee and husband, Don of La Junta, CO; two brothers, William Lewis Gibson and wife, Ruby of Yelm, WA and Clarence Reginald Gibson and wife, Barbara of Clifton Forge; thirteen grandchildren: Jason, Travis, Heather, Levi, Stacey, Misty, Justin, Scotty, Tana, Jayson, Tomalea, Hannah, and Leighton; twenty-two great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Paul Brokaw and Reverend Doug Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Walter Nicely, Jr., Bobby Gillespie, Kirby Buzzard, Christopher Nicely, Benjamin Nicely, and Jason Gibson. Honorary pallbearers will be Travis Gibson and Jayson Higgins. The family received friends on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia.
