Obituary for William White Reid William White Reid
Musician Was Inducted Into The International Bluegrass Hall Of Fame

William White Reid, 88, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 in Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem, VA.

He was born June 17, 1921 in Lexington, a son of the late Charles Gilmore Reid and June Entsminger Reid.

He was a member of Seneca Baptist Church, Elliston, VA. Mr. Reid loved his music, especially Bluegrass.

His professional music career started in 1945, when he joined the husband & wife team called Salt & Peanuts. Bill played with several well known artists, including Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and Stanley Brothers. He was a DJ for many regional radio stations, in Farmville, Clifton Forge, and Salem.

In the last year, he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame. Bill Reid's music is still remembered by many people in central and southwest Virginia as well as North Carolina.

Surviving are his wife, Nora Ellen Reid; children, Leslie W. Reid and wife, Bonnie of Floyd, David L. Reid, Rebecca R. Showalter, both of Salem, Dalton L. Reid of Christiansburg; three step-sons, Danny Blevins and wife, Amy, Ronnie Blevins and Michael Blevins, all of Salem; seven grandchildren; two nephews, Billy and Bobby Reid; nieces, Sharon and Susan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Collins and Rev. Virgil McHome officiating. Burial will follow in Collierstown Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
