John Allen Bennington, 82, of Lexington, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009.

Born September 10, 1926 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late John Lafayette Bennington and Sissie Virginia Hostetter Bennington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Virginia Trussell Bennington.

He was a member of the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church and was retired from McDowell & Wood Construction Co.

Surviving are his children: George A. Bennington, Palmer L. Bennington; Carolyn B. Cason; Larry C. Bennington, John L. Bennington, all of Lexington; Michael C. Bennington, Glasgow; Gloria B. Hostetter of Lexington; Richard W. Bennington, Staunton; Jeff W. Bennington, Lexington; twenty-two grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brothers, Avis Bennington and Charles Bennington, both of Lexington; a brother, Rufus Bennington, Bustleburg; a sister, Rowena Higgins of Pennsylvania; and Isabelle Ayers of Big Island.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2009 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tony Nix officiating. Burial will follow at the New Monmouth Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends may gather with the family from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
