Homemaker Was Active In Her Community, Enjoyed Gospel Music

Edna Bell Scruggs Nicely, age 84, of 809 Commerce Ave, Iron Gate, died Sunday, September 20, 2009 in Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor.

Born June 23, 1925 in Glen Wilton, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Robert Herman and Fannie Florence Fisher Scruggs.

She was a homemaker throughout her life, a former member of the Women of the Moose, and a member of Iron Gate Methodist Church.

She enjoyed gospel music and being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Dana Richard Nicely; a sister, Mary S. Barbee; a brother, Robert Perk Scruggs; and two beloved uncles, Dab Fisher and Sam Fisher.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Fulton "Dick" Nicely of Iron Gate; two daughters, Wanda Knick and husband, Earnie of Iron Gate and Rebecca Fridley and husband, Barry of Rich Patch, Covington; three sons, Stanley Nicely and wife, JoAnn of Ridgeley, WV; Gary Nicely and wife, Carolyn of Iron Gate; and Craig Nicely and wife, Wanda of Iron Gate; a sister, Lillie Mae Scruggs Thurston of Glen Wilton; a brother, James Scruggs and wife, Marsha of Hayes; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Edith Snedegar officiating. Interment will follow in Locust Bottom Cemetery, Glen Wilton. Pallbearers will be Ryan Nicely, Brian Nicely, Chad Nicely, Michael Nicely, Christopher Knick, Jason Fridley, and Todd Fridley. Honorary pallbearers will be Sonny Craft and Frank Thurston.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Shenandoah Autism Center, 550 Pine Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
