World War II Veteran Served On USS Wisconsin

Robert Edward Powell, 95, of 1030 Hattie Street in Mallow, Covington, Virginia, died Saturday night in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Powell was born July 5, 1914, at Fincastle in Botetourt County, a son of the late Robert Cleveland Powell and Pearl Kanode Powell.

He was a veteran of World War II with the U. S. Navy serving on the USS Wisconsin and was named a Life Member of the Curtis A. Smith Post #1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He retired in 1977 from the Waste Treatment Department of MeadWestvaco after 36 years with the company.

"Bob" was an avid hunter and active member of the McLaughlin Hunt Club for over 68 years. He was a true-hearted Atlanta Braves baseball fan and enjoyed making his garden every years and giving vegetables to the neighborhood.

He was an Honorary Life Member of Mallow Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, Treasurer of the Building Fund and member of the Men's Bible Class.

He was preceded in death by his Wife, Annie Hipes Powell, in March of this year and also by seven brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Rebecca Powell of Covington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Fox Wright and Peggy and Thornton Shinault, all of Covington; five grandchildren, Kathy and Johnny Murray, Rick and Angie Shinault, Jennifer and Paul Lee, Stacy and Richard Henry and Travis Powell, all of Covington; five great grandchildren, Sarah and Johnny Quinlin of Roanoke, Cory Shinault, Nicholas Henry and Cody Henry, all of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Mallow Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Marshall officiating.

Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park with graveside rites conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post #1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family received their friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Virginia.
