Obituary for Lucy Flippin Buford Lucy Flippin Buford
Award-Winning Equestrian Was Active In Her Community

Lucy Armistead Flippin Buford, 93, died at her home in Lexington, VA on October 5, 2009.

She was born in Charlottesville, VA on August 6, 1916 to the late Dr. James Carroll Flippin and Susan Isabel Anderson Flippin.

Her older siblings, Dr. Harrison Fitzgerald Flippin of Douglassville, Pa and Susan Isabel Worrall York of Charlottesville, predeceased her.

Mrs. Buford was married to Col. Algernon Sidney Buford III of Richmond, VA for 63 devoted years until his death in 2002. They resided in the Washington, D.C. area for 30 years where Mr. Buford served at the State Department and then retired to Lexington in the mid 1970's, where Mr. Buford had graduated from the Virginia Military Institute.

Lucy Buford, a graduate of St. Catherine's School, Richmond, was an award-winning equestrian and rosarian, a docent for Historic Preservation, board member of the S.P.C.A., member of the Junior League, a print model for Maxwell House Coffee, Pond's Cold Cream and appeared in VOGUE, photographed by the renowned Toni Frizell.

She was a member of the Lexington Golf and Country Club, Farmington Country Club, Blue Ridge Garden Club of Virginia, and the Virginia Historical Society. She attended the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Buford is survived by a brother-in-law, Robert S. Buford of Richmond; a cousin, Lucy Lee Gant of New York City; nieces Molly B. Buford of Richmond and Lucy Lee Flippin of Los Angeles, CA; nephews, James Carroll Flippin, II of Leesport, PA, William S. Flippin of Wyomissing Hills, PA, Robert S. Buford, Jr. of New York City, Lewis B. Buford and A. Sidney Buford IV, both of Richmond, and Patrick O. Buford of Alexandria; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Boys' Home Inc., 306 Boys Home Road, Covington, VA 24426.

The funeral service will take place at Robert E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, 123 West Washington St., Lexington on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. Followed by a graveside service at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, Lexington with the Rev. Tom Crittenden and the Rev. David Cox officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
