Obituary for Winfred Verts Nicely, Sr. Winfred Verts Nicely, Sr.
Retired Mechanic Was Korea War VeteranP> Winfred Verts Nicely, Sr., 81, of 5113 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.

He was born in Alleghany County, Virginia on September 12, 1928, a son of the late Earl James and Thelma Edith Nicely.

He was a retired mechanic at the former Hercules Inc. of Covington.

He was a member of the Sharon Rurtian Club and was previously active as coach of the Sharon Rurtians Little League baseball team.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Iron Gate Baptist Church , and he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon of the Sharon Baptist Church.

Winfred enjoyed spending time at the Triangle Service Station visiting with his many friends there.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Audrey Helms Nicely; a daughter, Patricia Mae Nicely of Charleston, South Carolina; a son, Winfred Verts "W.V." Nicely, Jr. and his wife, Kim of Clifton Forge; a sister, Ellen Fayne Nicely Snead and husband, Wesley of Clifton Forge; 3 grandchildren, Amanda Leigh "Mandy" Nicely, John Berkley Nicely and wife, Christy, and Molly Ellen Nicely; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. James Earl (Dot) Nicely, Jr and Mrs. Clinton Wayne (Kathleen) Nicely, both of Clifton forge; a host of nieces and nephews and cousins.

He is also survived by special friends, Terry Loving and Elizabeth "Liz" Fury of Clifton Forge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Janet Daniel Vance and Monada Nicely, and by 2 brothers, James Earl Nicely, Jr. and Clinton Wayne Nicely.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with the Rev. Hunter Hale officiating. Interment will follow in the Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

Active pallbearers will be John Berkley Nicely, Steven Nicely, Jr., Steve Nicely, Sr, Terry Loving, John Hoy, "Tuffy" Bush, Cletus Nicely, Barry Daniel, Ray Szymezak, and Wesley Snead, Jr.

Graveside military honors will be presented by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family wreceived friends Monday evening 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Winfred's name to the Building Fund of the Iron Gate Baptist Church, P.O. Box 193, Iron Gate, Virginia 24448.
