Retired Molder For Acadia Polymers Dies At Age 67

Curtis Durwood (Porky) Kern, Jr., age 67, of 910 Market Avenue, Iron Gate, Virginia, died Monday, January 4, 2010 at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem.

He was born on August 23, 1942 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, a son of the late Curtis Durwood Kern, Sr. and Elizabeth Liptrap Kern.

He was a retired molder for Acadia Polymers and was a member of the Virginia National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy Kern and Bill Kern.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Conner Kern of Iron Gate; three sons, Ronnie Kern and wife, Diana of Iron Gate, Craig Kern and wife, Theresa of Eagle Rock, and Michael Kern and wife, Pamela of Covington; six grandchildren, Jessica Carroll and husband, Roger, Brian Paxton, Ashlee Paxton, Tyler Kern, Michaela Kern, and Gabrielle Kern; two great grandchildren, Zamien Carroll and Kerstin Carroll; four sisters, Jean Thurston, Jeanette Hartzler and husband, George, Patricia Cumor and husband, Roland, and Brenda Lynn and husband, Archie; two brothers, Joe Kern and Raymond Kern; a number of nieces and nephews, and special friend, Lydia Lipscomb.

A funeral service was conducted on Thursday at 11:00 a.m in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Mike Rollins officiating. In keeping with his wishes, his body was cremated following the service. The family received friends Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Nicely Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence of Michael and Pamela Kern, 2100 Dressler Drive, Covington.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, handled the arrangements.
