Born November 22, 1928 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late John Lafayette Bennington and Sissie Virginia Hostetter Bennington.

Surviving are two brothers, Charles Bennington; Rufus Bennington, both of Lexington; two sisters, Isabelle Ayers of Big Island; Rowena Higgins of Pennsylvania.
