World War II Veteran Was Nose Gunner, Westvaco Maintenance Supervisor

Mr. Robert Lewis (Bob) Smith, age 89, of 1527 S. Franklin Avenue, Covington, Virginia, died Sunday, June 20, 2010, at his residence.

He was the husband of Carol Burley Smith.

Mr. Smith was born April 17, 1921 in Nebraska, the son of the late Wallace Robert Smith and Ester Robinson Smith.

He served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Air Force, where he was a B-24 Nose Gunner in Africa.

Mr. Smith was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served his church as an elder and deacon. He was a life member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Smith was a member of the Covington Masonic Lodge No. 171 AF&AM, where he served his lodge as Worshipful Master in 1978, District Deputy Grand Master in 1982, and served the Grand Lodge of Virginia on the committee on works.

During his years as a member, he conducted a number of Masonic funerals and was an honorary member of all the lodges in the 23 Masonic District consisting of Covington Lodge, Clifton Forge Lodge, Millboro Lodge, and Valley Springs Lodge.

He retired from Westvaco, where he worked as a supervisor in the Maintenance Department.

In addition to his wife, Carol Burley Smith, Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Gail Wood and husband, Gene; two grandchildren, Robbie Wood and Jenny Wood Crawford and husband, Tommy; two brothers, Burton Smith and wife, Juanita of Hot Springs, Jimmie Smith of Christiansburg; a sister, Genevieve Smith Link of Newport; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Wallace Robert Smith and Ester Robinson Smith, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Burley Smith.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Giles officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Graveside rites will be conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Masonic rites will be conducted Tuesday evening at Loving Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home and at other times at his residence 1527 S. Franklin Avenue.

The family suggests that donations take the form of contributions to Covington Masonic Lodge 171 AF & AM, c/o Ray Walton, 599 White Oak Lane, Covington, VA 24426 or the Covington Rescue Squad, 435 Hawthorne Street, Covington VA 24426.
