Obituary for James Douglas (Smokey) Mattox James Douglas (Smokey) Mattox
Air Force Veteran Worked With Forest Service For 32 Years

Mr. James Douglas (Smokey) Mattox, age 76, of 4609 Johnson Creek Road, Covington, Virginia, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor.

He was the husband of Aline Andrews Mattox.

Mr. Mattox was born January 29, 1934 in Elbert County, GA, the son of the late J. James Mattox and Rosalie Wheelis Mattox.

He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Korean War Conflict and following that enlistment, he served with the Army National Guard, acquiring forty-three years of service to his country between the two enlistments.

Mr. Mattox graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry and was employed by the United States Forest Service from 1962 until his retirement in 1994 with thirty-two years service.

Mr. Mattox was stationed in various parts of the country with the forest service, including Greenwood, S.C., Idaho and Montana before being transferred to the George Washington National Forest, James River District in 1974.

He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a former deacon. Mr. Mattox was a former scoutmaster, a life member and EMT with Dunlap Rescue Squad, and had been a member of the Callaghan Ruritan Club.

In addition to his wife, Aline Andrews Mattox, Mr. Mattox is survived by one son, Douglas Dwayne Mattox and wife, Sherry and their children, Brianna Mattox, Trent Mattox, and Trevor Mattox, all of Watkinsville, GA; one daughter, Donna Mattox Schuler and husband, Chris and their children, Stephen Schuler, Morgan Schuler, Hanna Schuler, all of Charlottesville; one brother, Manuel Mattox and wife, Pat of Sandy Cross, GA; one sister, Dallas M. Fowler and husband, Delbert of Bowman, GA.

In addition to his parents, J. James Mattox and Rosalie Wheelis Mattox, Mr. Mattox was preceded in death by one son, James Andrew Mattox in 1993.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2010, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. William M. Hartsfield officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Military rites at the graveside will be conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard Funeral Honors Program.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home and suggest that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Temple Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 300 Stratton Street, Covington, VA 24426.
