Dedicated Her Life To The Education Of Children

Margaret Gleason Carter, of Selma, Virginia, passed away July 27, 2010 at the age of 92.

She was born December 7, 1917 at Riverview Farm, near Low Moor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee M. and Mary Frances Harris Gleason; her devoted husband, L.M. "Bud" Carter Jr.; and daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and Walter Burgandine; sisters, Mary Salina Crump, Lucy Evelyn Gleason, Dora Lee Gornto, and Rebecca Frances Carr; brothers, Hillary Carlyle Gleason, Irvine Larkin Gleason, Robert Hugh Gleason, John Harris Gleason, Lee McCullough Gleason, Jr., and two brothers who passed in infancy.

She is survived by, two daughters, Margaret Frances Carter of Braedenton, Fl., and Wanda Jean Carter Smith and husband, Steve Smith, of Roanoke, Va.; one son L.M. "Buddy" Carter and wife, Elisabeth, of Eagle Rock, Va; and six grandchildren, Robert Atkins and wife, Honor, of Essex, England, Margaret Carter Valois and husband, Paul, of Forest, Va., Lisa Smith Camp and husband, Joey, of Roanoke, Va, Elizabeth Atkins Hood and husband, Kevin, of Braedenton, Fl., Elisabeth Carter Thompson and husband, Ed, of Clintonville, WV, and Anita Smith Oxendine and husband, Kevin, of Moneta, Va. She had 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Also surviving Mrs. Carter are sisters-in-law, Mildred Carter Pullen, Annabelle Deeds Gleason, Virginia Carter Miller and husband, F. Harmon, and Jeanne Smith Carter. She is also survived by a number of beloved nieces and nephews.

Margaret attended Low Moor Presbyterian Church, but always considered herself a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Oakland Church Perpetual Care Fund. She was also an active member in the group of concerned citizens who were essential in the closure of the Kim Stan Dump site, which endangered OaklandÕs churchyard.

She dedicated 30 years of her life to the education of children in the county. She volunteered at Central Elementary, where she worked with children with special needs, Clifton Middle School, where she assisted with the county's gifted program, and, finally at Mountain View Elementary in the speech and language department.

Margaret considered it a great honor to lead the Gleason family heirs in the donation of land owned by her parents, Lee M. and Mary Frances Harris Gleason for the construction of Mountain View Elementary and Clifton Middle School.

Besides her family, she considered this her greatest legacy.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia with the Reverend Lisa Marshall officiating. Interment followed at Alleghany Memorial Park, Covington, Va. The family received visitors on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Nicely Funeral Home or will at any time at the home of her son at 105 Fairfield Court, Eagle Rock, Va. Memorial donations may be made to Oakland Church Perpetual Care Fund in care of Low Moor Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 125, Low Moor, Virginia 24457 or the Lucy Evelyn Gleason Scholarship Fund in care of Education Foundation, Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, P.O. Box 1000, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422, which supports Alleghany High School graduates pursuing a degree in education.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia, handled the arrangements.
