Missionary Worked With Bullpen Restaurant For Over 40 Years

Mother Theressa Viola Peters Key, of 637 Verge Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at her residence at the age of 100.

She was born August 19, 1909 in Clifton Forge, VA, a daughter of the late Sidney and Lillian O'Neil Peters.

She was an evangelist missionary at the Garden of Prayer Church of God in Christ in Covington until it closed. She later attended the First Church of God in Christ in Clifton Forge until her health failed.

She was the widow of Mr. William W. Key who died in 1974.

She was employed at the YMCA Restaurant (Bullpen Restaurant and the Clifton Forge Inn) for over forty years.

She volunteered at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, and for many years was instrumental in collecting funds for the maintenance of Red Hill Cemetery.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Key; a daughter, Thelma Key Brown; a son, Joe Louis Key; three sisters, Lila Peters Brown, Mabel Peters Watson, and Annie B. Powell; three brothers, Lewis Peters, John Richard Peters, and McKinley Peters, Sr.; and four grandsons, Jerome Allen, Willie Allen, Leon Key, and B. J. Banks.

She is survived by three daughters, Evelyn "ET" Broady, Geraldine Allen and husband, Donald, and Catherine Godfrey, all of Clifton Forge; a step daughter, Carolyn Allen and husband, William of Iron Gate; a son, Richard M. Key of Clifton Forge; seventeen grandchildren: Betty Liggins, Diane Banks, Wanda Broady- Qaiser- Hartman, Attell Allen, Greg Key, Lynn Brown, Jo Ann Brown, "T." Brown, Ressie Griffin, Monique Knight, Aaron Key, Victor Key, Roderick Key, Velma Jeffries, Robin Allen, Deborah Allen, William Allen; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Peters of Clifton Forge; numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Clifton Forge with Reverend Roslyn Thomas officiating and Elder Leon Taylor delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Red Hill Cemetery, Clifton Forge. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Attell Allen, Greg Key, William Allen, Jr., Elija Hall, Mark Leisure, Robert Turner, William Lewis, and Aaron Key. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge and other times at the residence.
