Was Retired Ward Secretary For Emmett Memorial Hospital

Beatrice Spangler Burnside, age 89, of 167 Pond Gap Lane, Craigsville, Virginia, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Envoy Nursing Home in Staunton.

She was born March 6, 1921 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, a daughter of the late Charles Lewis and Mabel C. Williams Spangler.

She was a retired ward secretary for the former Emmett Memorial Hospital in Clifton Forge.

She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she was in the Wesleyan Sunday School Class and the Jean Craig Circle, and had been attending Miller Memorial Church in Craigsville for the past four years.

She enjoyed walking very much.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Gilbert Burnside, Sr. in 2002; her son, Grant G. Burnside, Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Mildred) Higgins and Miss Mary H. Spangler; and six brothers, Harold Spangler, Bobby Spangler, Billy Spangler, Basil Spangler, Bernard Spangler, and Vernon Spangler.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicky B. Smiley and husband, Steve of Craigsville; daughter-in-law, Donna Burnside of Beckley, WV; a sister, Jane S. Higgins of Clifton Forge; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Spangler and Elsie Ayers, both of Clifton Forge; eight grandchildren, Allen Tyler and wife, Connie, Todd Tyler and wife, LeeAnna, Stacey Tyler, Melissa B. Bassett, Cathy B. Wingrove and husband, Randy, Stephen Smiley, Jr., Heather Cole and husband, Roscoe, and Roger Legg; twelve great grandchildren, Tony Angell, Amanda Tyler, Travis Tyler, Chad Bassett, Kylie Bassett, Summer Bassett, Shannon Wingrove, McKenzie Wingrove, Brandi Wingrove, Victoria R. Smiley, Ella G. Smiley, and Allyssa Cole; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Scott Reese and Tyler Clem officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Sidney Tyler, Mark Spangler, Winnie Spangler, Malcolm Higgins, Ricky Higgins, Earl Higgins, Jr., David Clark, and Bernard Spangler, Jr. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Miller Memorial Church Radio Ministry, Augusta Springs, VA.
