Dunlap High School Graduate Was Longtime Cashier

Phyllis Fleshman Crawford, 90, of 1700 Westwood Drive, Covington, Virginia, died, Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Low Moor.

Mrs. Crawford was born August 2, 1920 in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Samuel Young Fleshman and Bessie Mae Ballard Fleshman.

She was a graduate of Dunlap High School and was employed as a cashier at the former Corner Grocery, Smith's Super Market and the Mick or Mack Grocery Store in Covington.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Cleora Wallace, Nora Mae Overton, and Rose Weakley; three brothers, Elmo Fleshman, Marvin Fleshman and Melvin Fleshman, and a niece, Delores Hamden.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 63 years, Archie F. Crawford; four sisters-in-law, Renna Lee Fleshman of Lynchburg, Beulah Taylor of Dallas, NC, Genny Hayslett and Nina Nicholson, both of Newwport News; eleven nieces, Betty Mae Kelly of Canton, Ohio, Shirley Fruth of Ft. Myers, FL, Dorothy and Jerry Burks and Kimberly and Brent Hensley, all of Covington; Carolyn and Guy Young of Salem, Vaughna Shank of Roanoke, Michaelene and Mike Baffuto of Mechanicsville, Teresa and John Lane of Lynchburg, Debbie and Jeff Herron of Northern Virginia, Susan Little of Kentucky and Julia Chappell of Newport News; eight nephews, Melvin M. "Bill" Fleshman, Jr. of Richmond, James and Elizabeth Fleshman of Dublin; Tony and Julie Fleshman of Chesterfield; Harold Hayslett and Russell Burnette, both of Newport News; Walt Burnette of Williamsburg and Alan Wilmer of Colorado; Linwood Robinson of Tennessee; two very special friends, Percy Caldwell and Katie Armstrong of Covington; and her dear little companion, Tiffney.

The funeral service will be held Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Poluikis officiating assisted by the Rev. Bill Hartsfield. Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park.

The family will receive their friends for one hour prior to service time at Arritt Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends attending the service.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mrs. Crawford's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, VA 24015.

The Arritt Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
