Former Shoe Box Center, Nicely's Insurance Agency Owner, CSX Foreman Dies At Age 81

Carl Eugene (Uncle Carl) Nicely, age 81, of 4505 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Saturday November 13, 2010 at LewisGale-Alleghany in Low Moor.

He was born September 12, 1929 in the Sharon area of Alleghany County, a son of the late Shadrick M. and Susie Conner Nicely.

He was a member of Clifton Forge Baptist Church and a local businessman, who along with his wife, Nancy, was the former owner of the Shoe Box Sports Center and Nicely's Insurance Agency in Covington.

He was also the retired General Foreman Mechanical of CSX Transportation and in his earlier years, he worked for Clifton Forge Motor Company.

He also served for several years in the Virginia National Guard.

In recent years he owned and operated a produce stand on Main Street in Clifton Forge, where he had many friends who dropped by daily to visit and chat. Carl was also the owner and founder of the Ro-Ho Hunt Club, where he had many dear friends and relatives who were and are members. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Carl" by his friends and employees.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, S.L. Nicely of Clifton Forge, Richard Nicely of Vinton, and Arnold Nicely of Clifton Forge; also a sister, Evelyn N. Smith of Bremo Bluff, VA.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Hambrick Nicely, of the home; three brothers, Marion E. Nicely, Rev. Dennis E. Nicely and his wife, Peggy, Nolan R. Nicely and his wife, Jackie, all of Clifton Forge; four sisters, Margaret N. Griffith, Ethel N. Collins, both of Clifton Forge, and Hazel N. Burns and her husband, Rev. John Burns, of New Castle, and Joanne N. Land and her husband, Dalton "Babe" of Roanoke. Survivors also include special nephews and nieces, Nolan R. Nicely, Jr. and his wife, Hope, Lori Nicely-Moore, Marcia H. Wham and her husband, Ken, Cedar Moore, Laurel Moore, and Nolan R. Nicely, III, all of Clifton Forge; Rev. Mark Hambrick and his wife, Devona, of Newport News, Amy H. Young and her husband, Tim, of Roanoke, Lori H. Rowsey and her husband, Allen of Charleston, SC; Sarah Young and her husband, Jacob of Roanoke, Lilah Rowsey of Charleston, SC; sisters-in-law, Eloise Hambrick, of Petersburg, Lydia Nicely, Lois Nicely, both of Clifton Forge; and brother-in-law, James Smith of New Canton, VA. Survivors also include many other nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces and friends, all of whom loved and respected him greatly.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Rev. Mike Rollins and the Rev. Glenn Linthicum officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Pallbearers will be current members of the Ro-Ho Hunt club. Honorary pallbearers will be the friends of the Produce Market. The family received friends on Monday at the Nicely Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, Alleghany Highlands Division, c/o Karen Buzzard, 870 McCormick Boulevard, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
