Obituary for Margaret Ann Whittington Margaret Ann Whittington
Well-Known Vesuvius Resident Was Active In Her Community

Margaret Ann Whittington, 62, of Vesuvius, Virginia, died on Monday, December 13, 2010.

She was born on August 13, 1948 in Radford, Virginia, the daughter of David. K. Whittington of Natural Bridge and Peggy Ann Kerns of Goshen.

She and her husband, Ed Wagner, moved to Vesuvius from Sylmar, California eighteen years ago.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Edward A. Wagner; her father, David Kelsey Whittington; and her brothers, David Kelsey Whittington Jr., John Kerns Whittington and Thomas Ray Whittington of Pennsylvania; her aunts, Natalie Kerns McWilliams of Ohio, Jane Whittington Herndon of West Virginia, and Mary Elizabeth Whittington Goolsby of Lexington; her uncles, John Whittington of Lexington and Rev. Thomas Quinn Kerns of Ohio, and many loving cousins. And by her mother-in law, Ruth Wagner, and sister-in-law, Geri Wagner of Ohio, and sister-in-law, Mary Wagner Yates, of South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

While living in California, Margaret Ann's volunteer efforts included service as Chairman of the Community Planning Advisory Committee for the City of Los Angeles for four years. With assistance from the Department of City Planning, her committee developed a revised community plan for Sylmar, a community of 70,000 within the City of Los Angeles. She organized over 100 Neighborhood Watch groups, founded the Neighborhood Watch Network to coordinate neighborhood efforts, and was the founding member of the Sylmar Graffiti Busters, Inc. She was named A Good Neighbor of the Year@ twice and given a "Woman of Achievement" award by the Sylmar Chamber of Commerce.

After moving to Vesuvius, Margaret Ann was employed for nine years as the administrator for the law firm Black, Noland & Read in Staunton. She was active in many community organizations to include becoming the first female member and president of the Vesuvius Ruritan Club and president of the Vesuvius Community Association. In addition, she was a member of the Rockbridge County Democratic Committee, the Rockbridge Area Conservation Council, the Rockbridge County Historical Society and the Rockbridge Forestry Association. She was a master gardener and the first editor of the Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners Association newsletter. She served as president of the Virginia Division United Daughters of the Confederacy, James S. A. Crawford Chapter. She was an avid supporter of the SPCA and over her lifetime rescued over fifty cats.

Margaret Ann generously offered her time, energy and talents to her community, friends and family. She was a remarkable woman who gave of herself every day, had an impact on many lives and made a difference in the communities where she lived. Gifts in memory of Margaret Ann may be made to any of the organizations mentioned above.

Arrangements for services are being made and will be announced after the holidays.
