Obituary for Lydia Marie Smith Deacon Lydia Marie Smith Deacon
Rockbridge County Native Was Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church Member

Lydia Marie Smith Deacon, 93, of Lexington, Virginia, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Heritage Hall.

Born September 1, 1917 in Rockbridge County, she was a daughter of the late Millard Lee Smith and Willie Ann Dudley Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Whitmore Deacon; two sons, Whitmore S. Deacon, Clarence F. Deacon, and one daughter Nettie G. Caldwell.

Lydia was a member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, a homemaker, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are five sons, Kenton L. Deacon and Hunter D. Deacon, both of Buchanan; Carl P. Deacon of Fairfield; Wade G. Deacon of Lexington; Ray A. Deacon of Buena Vista; three daughters, Bessie A. Dudley, Helen A. Deacon, and Hilda M. Dudley, all of Lexington; thirty-two grandchildren and fifty great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Oxford Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, but the family will greet friends before the service.
