VMI Civil Engineering Professor Dies At Age 53

Peter Windell Hoadley, 53, of Lexington, Va., died Friday, January 7, 2011, at the University of Virginia Medical Center from complications due to heart transplant surgery.

He was born on August 29, 1957, in Urbana, Ill., raised in Nashville, Tenn., the son of Emily and Robert Anderson, and Peter G. and Susan Hoadley, all of Nashville, Tennessee.

Peter was a professor of civil engineering at Virginia Military Institute for 23 years. He received a Ph.D. in structural engineering from the University of Texas Austin. Peter earned the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004 from VMI and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Southeastern Section's Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006. Peter also served as a leader in the ASEE.

During his time as a professor, he participated in two faculty exchanges: the Royal Military College of Science, in Wiltshire, England, and Al Akhawayn University, in lfrane, Morocco.

Peter was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Lexington.

He was a beloved member of the community, who worked with youth and served in a variety of ways.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Jane Nash Hoadley; two sons, Ensign Benjamin Hoadley, USN, and wife, Kristen, of Pensacola, Fla., and Matthew Hoadley, of Staunton, Va.; one daughter, Teresa, of Staunton; two sisters, Barbara Cassel, of Kingston Springs, Tenn., and Gail Buchalski and husband, Robert, of Detroit, Mich.; and special daughter, Katya Sokolova, of Ufa, Russia. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at Jackson Memorial Hall with the Rev. Paul Carter officiating.

There will be a private burial. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2011, at the Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington.
