Obituary for Beryl Weckwerth Honsinger Beryl Weckwerth Honsinger
Longtime Teacher Was Volunteer With Many Services

Beryl Weckwerth Honsinger, 73, of Lexington, Virginia, died Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born, February 16, 1937, in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of the late Charles Frederick Weckwerth and Mary Elizabeth Haeffner Weckwerth.

Beryl attained the highest rank of Girl Scouting.

She graduated from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina and taught physical education and other subjects in public schools. Later as a grandmother, she earned her degree of Master of Education in Therapeutic Recreation from Springfield College in Massachusetts, earned national certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, and subsequently worked in a nursing home and in a psychiatric hospital.

As a volunteer in years gone by, she taught swimming for the disabled and others, tennis, and first aid. She was an emergency room Gray Lady in military hospitals, a member of the women's auxiliary of the volunteer fire department, a Cub Scout den mother for her three sons, and a volunteer for the Boy Scouts, Red Cross, and Navy Relief Society.

In Lexington, she was a long-serving volunteer at Stonewall Jackson Hospital and was immediate past president of the Hospital Auxiliary. She met regularly with a wheelchair group for 15 years. She was a volunteer for Hospice, Project Horizon, Rockbridge Area Relief Association, and Kendal at Lexington, a continuing care retirement community.

She used her skills in sewing, knitting, weaving, and Master Gardener to volunteer in many ways, and she tutored children. She was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church and the sisterhood of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization). She was a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow of the Lexington Rotary Club.

Surviving are her childhood sweetheart and husband, Captain Vernon Chapin Honsinger, U.S. Navy (Retired); sons, Michael Vernon Honsinger and wife, Valerie, of Magnolia, TX; Peter Charles Honsinger and wife, Connie, of Chesterfield, VA; John Chapin Honsinger and wife, Anneliese, of Florence, N.J; five grandchildren, and 8/9ths of her first great grandchild; sister, Laura Jo Weckwerth Judd and husband, Kirby of Stafford Springs, CT; and sister-in-law, Valerie (Honsinger) Kirkpatrick Joiner and husband, Robert of Snellville, GA.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2011, at Lexington Presbyterian Church with the Dr. William Klein, Rev Deborah Klein, and the Rev. Benjamin W. Dowling, III officiating. A private scattering of the remains will precede the memorial service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary, 1 Health Circle, Lexington, VA 24450.
