Obituary for Hiram Beery Detwiler, Jr. Hiram Beery Detwiler, Jr.
Clifton Forge Community Leader Was H. O. Canfield Retiree, Master Mason

Hiram Beery Detwiler, Jr. 94, of Scott Hill and formerly of Linden Avenue, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Brian Center - Alleghany in Low Moor.

He was born in Kimberton, Pennsylvania on August 13, 1916, a son of the late Hiram Beery Detwiler, Sr. and Ida Wolf Detwiler.

He was a retired Quality Control Engineer for over 25 years with the former H.O. Canfield in Iron Gate.

He was raised to the degree of Master Mason in Chicago, and later became a member of Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge #166 A.F. & A.M. He was a 60 year Mason. He was a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite bodies and a member of the Roanoke Valley Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Kazim Temple Shriners and a member of the Clifton Forge Shrine Club.

Mr. Detwiler served as chairman for a number of years on the Board of Scott Hill Retirement Complex. He was an active member of the Clifton Forge Lions Club, where he had served as a past president. He was a leader in the "Coffee Club" that meets daily at First Citizens Bank in Clifton Forge. He loved golf, fishing and gardening, and was a true Penn State Fan.

He was a member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, where he had served as deacon and elder of the church. Hiram was a community leader who loved to organize social events for his friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Woertz Detwiler in September of 2004.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Roberta ("Bobbie") and John Purcell of Montclair, Virginia.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. from the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church with Rev. Paul Brokaw officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Active pallbearers will be Jerry Clark, Willard Camp, Tom Dean, Carl Brinkley, John Hillert, Jim Drewry, Sam Clark and Richard Miller. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.

Masonic rites will be conducted by Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge #166 A.F.& A.M. at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Clifton Forge Lions Club, c/o Rev. J. Glenn Linthicum, Clifton Forge Baptist Church, P.O. Box 121, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or to the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, 544 Church Street, Clifton Forge, Va.24422.
