Mitchelltown Native Was World War II Veteran, Long Time Hot Springs Postmaster

Arthur Parker McMullen, age 95, of Hot Springs, Virginia, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011 in Clifton Forge.

He was born June 29, 1915 in Mitchelltown, near Hot Springs, Virginia, to the late Charles F. and Hilda Rodgers McMullen.

He graduated from Valley High School in 1933, began working as a clerk at the Hot Springs Post Office, then joined the United States Army to serve during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations in New Guinea and the Philippines.

Following the war, he returned to Hot Springs Post Office, and in 1958, was appointed Postmaster by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was the last presidential appointment made to position of Postmaster in Hot Springs.

Arthur retired in 1981, having served a longer tenure as Postmaster than any previous presidential appointee in Hot Springs.

He was a charter member of the Hot Springs Rescue Squad and a member of Millboro Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Via McMullen on August 3, 2010; a sister, Madie Glenn McMullen; and two brothers, Conley Astor McMullen and Ronald McMullen.

He is survived by two sons, Greg McMullen of Covington and Glenn McMullen and wife, Debbie of Williamsville; a sister, Estaline Bower of Hot Springs; a brother, Clarence McMullen of Salem; two grandsons, Colby McMullen and wife, Becky of Churchville, and Shay McMullen of Williamsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Millboro Christian Church Cemetery, Millboro with Pastor Donald Lee Altizer officiating. There will be no visitation. However, friends may call any time at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.

The Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge is in charge of arrangements.
