Obituary for Herbert Lincoln Winans Herbert Lincoln Winans
Korean War Veteran Was Avid Outdoorsman

Herbert Lincoln Winans, 80, of Lexington, Virginia, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Born August 16, 1930 in Trenton, NJ, he was a son of the late Herbert and Madeleine Winans.

Mr. Winans attended St. Bernard's Episcopal Prep and graduated from the Hampton School in Hampton, NJ and Columbia University in New York City, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

Herb was a veteran of the Korean War.

He retired from a career in Corporate Benefits, was an avid outdoorsmen and fly fisherman who enjoyed 22 years of retirement in Lexington.

Herb served as a past president for Meals for Shut-ins, the Kiwanis Club, was a docent for the Stonewall Jackson House, was on the Civil War Roundtable, and he was an adult leader for the Boy Scouts.

Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia Wood Winans of Lexington; one son John Peter "J.P." and his wife, Colleen; two granddaughters, Molly Anne and Haley Catherine Winans, all of Arnold, MD. Special thanks to Dr. James Crews for the care and concern given.

A celebration of Herb's life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Sunnyside at Kendal with the Rev. John Furgerson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Meals for Shut-ins, P.O. Box 581, Lexington, VA 24450.
