Was Covington Police Department Communications Officer

Mary Brogan Rogers Helms, 61, of 4906 Johnson Creek Road, Covington, Virginia, died Monday, March 28, 2011 at her residence.

She was born November 14, 1949 in Bellburn, West Virginia, a daughter of Anice Irene Lilly Brogan of Elton, WV and the late Junior Clinton Brogan.

Mary retired as a Communications Officer for the Covington Police Department after 13 years of service.

She was a faithful and dedicated wife and mother.

Mary enjoyed gardening, sewing and spending time with her family and friends and was an avid farmer on Facebook. She was a devoted caretaker of hummingbirds each spring and summer and welcomed them to her yard.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William C. "Bill" Rogers in 1996.

In addition to her mother, Mary is survived by her husband, Ray Helms of Covington; two sons, William Robert "Robby" Rogers and his wife, Violet of Covington and Carlos "Dale" Rogers and his wife, Jennifer of Roanoke; six grandchildren, Lauren Kay Rogers ; William Andrew Rogers; Heidi Marie Rogers; Haley Nicole Rogers; Nathan Aaron Rogers and Breanna Helms; two step sons, Timothy Ray Helms of Clifton Forge and Duane Edward Helms and his wife, Kathy of Roanoke; one brother, Eugene Clinton Brogan of Commerce, GA; four sisters, Carmella Bennett and her husband, Lane of Siler City, NC; Deborah Brogan-Burris of Dallas, NC; Krista Pugh and her husband, David of Layland, WV and Lisa Andrews and her husband, Paul of Elton, WV; a family friend, Gene Horton of Elton, WV; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

The family received friends Tuesday evening, March 29, 2011 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Garland Humphries officiating.

The interment was made in Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Rainelle, WV. Active pallbearers were selected from family and friends attending the service.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mary's name be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Karen Buzzard, 807 McCormick Boulevard, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
