Retired Rockbridge County Teacher Dies At Age 100

Nellie Greene Lowe, 100, of Lexington, Virginia, died Friday, May 27, 2011.

Born October 6, 1910 in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late John Ernest Greene and Elizabeth Kirby Greene.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson Davison Lowe; one sister, Inez Greene Clements, and one brother, James Ernest Greene.

Mrs. Lowe was a member of the Timber Ridge ARP Church where she taught Sunday School, retired from the Rockbridge County School System as a teacher, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Martha Lowe Straub and Alfred Almond Straub; one grandson, John William Straub, all of Fairfield; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Benjamin W. Dowling, III officiating. Burial will follow at Timber Ridge ARP Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Charles Clements, William Clements, James Clements, Jean Clements, Bobby Chittum, and Joe Straub.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
