Dorothy Via Hancock, 90, formerly of Alleghany Ave., Covington, Virginia, died Saturday, June 18, 2011.

She was born November 12, 1920 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Ralph and Mattie Higgins Via.

Mrs. Hancock was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church and she was a Life Member of Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 VFW Ladies Auxilary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Hancock, Sr. in 1993; two daughters, Nancy H. Fridley in 1979 and Dottie H. Persinger in 1987 and a daughter-in-law, Tillie Hancock in 2010.

Surviving are four sons, George H. Hancock, Jr. and his wife, Dale; Ronald E. Hancock and his wife, Debbie; Ralph E. Hancock and his wife, Bobbie, all of Covington and Michael G. Hancock and Kathy of Hampton, NH; 17 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren.

The funeral servcie will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in the Arritt Funera Home Chapel with the Rev. Dean Bowser officiating.

The interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Friends may pay their respects any time at the Arritt Funeral Home . The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home. The Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.
