Obituary for Leonard William Jones, Sr. Leonard William Jones, Sr.
World War II Veteran Was Retired Crane Operator

Leonard William Jones, Sr., age 95, of 2601 Vassar Street, Low Moor, Virginia, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at his residence.

He was born January 30, 1916 in Covington, Virginia, to the late Pledge Calloway and Louisa McCray Jones.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a retired crane operator for Westvaco.

He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and former member of Main Street Baptist Church, a former member of the J. W. Barnes Masonic Lodge # 305, the Covington Ruritan Club, and member and past president of the local chapter of the NAACP.

He served on the TAP Board of Directors, the Alleghany County Advisory Planning Commission, and was Vice President of the Local 675 for Westvaco.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Stewart Edward Jones and Lee L. Goode; and a grandson.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Catherine Murrell Jones of Low Moor; two sons, Leonard William Jones, Jr. and wife, Sylvia of Covington, and James "Jimmy" Jones of Newport News; a daughter-in-law, Eloise Goode of Louisville, KY; five grandchildren, Leonard Jones III, Lynnette Renee Jones, Debra Goode, Lee Goode, and Helen Goode; fourteen great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; numerous cousins; and special friends, Jimmy Martin, Leigh Greenblatt, Lorraine Beverly, Carl Hamm, and Ruby Lewis.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Low Moor with Reverend Matthew T. Barnette, Sr. officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 11:00 a.m.. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by members of the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033. Pallbearers and flower bearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. Honorary pallbearers will be George Goode, Paul Beverly, and George Halsey, Sr. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.
