He grew up in Frankfort, Kentucky, and graduated from Georgetown College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his Ph. D. He is survived by his brother, Glen, and sister-in-law, Sipra of Poughkeepsie, NY, a niece, Denise Johnson of Washington, DC, and a nephew, Robert Alexander Johnson of Portland, OR.
