Carolyn McAllister Kirby, 67, of 5815 Indian Draft Road, Covington, Virginia, died Monday evening, August 29, 2011, in the Lewis-Gale Medical Center at Salem.

Mrs. Kirby was born February 20, 1944, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Rose McAllister.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda McAllister.

She was a longtime member of Hokes Chapel United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women of the church.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Sidney Kirby of Covington; her daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Butch Brown of Covington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Sue Kirby of Covington and Andrew and Tina Kirby of Petersburg; seven grandchildren, Miranda Kirby, Martin Madali, Tanja Blizzard, Kyle Kirby, Lucas Kirby, Hanna Kirby, and Kirby Lee Brown; five great grandchildren; two Sisters, Sharon Hayslett and her husband, Julian Hayslett, Jr., and Lois Fleming and her husband, Bill, all of Covington; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Linda McAllister of Hopewell, Sterling and Cheryl McAllister of Yorktown and Edgar and Sharon McAllister of Sanford, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. James Rodden officiating. The family received riends Wednesday evening at Arritt Funral Home. Interment will be made in the Hokes Chapel Cemetery.

The Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Virginia, handled the arrangements.
