Army National Guard Veteran Worked For Westvaco For 44 Years

Gary Scott (Scottie) Hayslett, age 68, of 121 Oak-N-Thorn Way, Clifton Forge, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 30, 2011.

He passed away peacefully at his home in Iron Gate.

He was born November 5, 1942, in Clifton Forge, to the late William Kermit Hayslett and Laura Elizabeth Larman Hayslett.

He served in the Army National Guard, worked for Westvaco in Covington for 44 years, was an avid outdoorsman, and a deacon and trustee for many years at Immanuel Baptist Church.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kermit Hayslett in 1977; his mother, Laura Hayslett on May 15, 2011; and a brother, Gerald Wayne Hayslett in August 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Bryan Hayslett; two children, Michael Scott Hayslett and wife, Dorothy of Amherst, Virginia, and Myra Hayslett Day of Clifton Forge; three grandchildren, Corbin Foster Scott Hayslett, Katherine Lee Day, and Caleb James Day; two sisters, Brenda Gayle Hayslett Daniel and husband, Barry of Clifton Forge, and Julia Leona Hayslett Steese and husband, Fred of Oconto Falls, Wisconsin; five brothers, Ronald Elliott Hayslett and wife, Lynda, Wade Franklin Hayslett and wife, Joyce, Farron Eugene "Buster" Hayslett, and Mitchell Cory Hayslett and wife, Vicki, all of Clifton Forge; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church on Douthat Road, Clifton Forge, with the Rev. Lloyd Camp officiating, assisted by Pastor Bill Dillon. Interment followed in the Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Doc Thompson, Bill Thompson, Donald Dale, Kenny Mayo, Ron Thomas, Gary Johnson, David Thurston, and Tim Mayo. The family received friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
