Dessie Chittum Slough, 87, of Buena Vista, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2011.

She was born on January 18, 1924, in Rockbridge County, the daughter of the late Robert Chittum and Grace Ramsey Chittum.

In addition to her parents, Dessie is preceded in death by her husband, Horace Paxton Slough Jr.

Surviving Mrs. Slough are her two daughters, Brenda Vassar and husband, Bobby, and Kim Austin and husband, Jay, both of Buena Vista; two brothers, Clifford Chittum, of Roanoke, and Richard Chittum, of Salem; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2011, at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Choi officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. John's United Methodist Church Youth Group.
