World War II Veteran Was Former Halmode Inspector

Iris Gooch Floyd Horton, 91, of 2026 S. Stewart Ave., Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, October 6, 2011 at The Woodlands in Clifton Forge.

She was born May 5, 1920 in Covington, a daughter of the Frank L. and Ella Harding Gooch.

Mrs. Horton served in the United States Army during World War II. She had retired as an Inspector for the former Halmode Inc. for a number of years. She was a member of the South Covington United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert L. Floyd, Jr. in 1970 and James W. Horton in 2001; two sisters, Darthey Quesenbery and Mary Alice McLean; and three brothers, Russell Gooch, Arthur Gooch, and Joseph Hack Gooch.

Surviving are one daughter and son in law, Judi and Daryol Booth of Covington; one son and daughter in law, R.L. Floyd III and Mickey of Covington; two step sons, Rev. Lanny Horton and his wife, Shelia of Culpepper and Jamie Horton and his wife, Diana of Charlotte , NC two granddaughters, Heather Lynn Simmons and her husband, Mike and Tara Leigh Craft and her husband, Burton of Covington, all of Covington; two grandsons, Robert L. Floyd IV and Robert D. and Melinda Booth of Covington; five great grandchildren; a number of step grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret King of Clifton Forge; Faye Arrington of NC and Ella Brisendine of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William M. Hartsfield officiating, assisted by the Rev. Steve Noel.

The interment followed in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Robert L. Floyd IV, Mike Simmons, Robert Booth, Burton Craft, Eddy Clemons, and Bill Evans. Honorary pallbearers were John Dunn and friends of the family.

The family received friends on Saturday evening at the Arritt Funeral Home.
