Obituary for Jane Smith Ryan Jane Smith Ryan
Clifton Forge Native Was Retired Butcher

Jane Smith Ryan, age 85, of 733 Commercial Avenue, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany, in Low Moor.

She was born in Clifton Forge, VA on March 29, 1926, a daughter of the late David Brinkley and Esther Eades Smith.

She was a member of Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, and a retired butcher, working for various grocery stores, first for Ed Van Lear, who taught her the trade, and finally, Mick or Mack.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha S. Steepteton and Suzanne S. Estep; and three brothers, David E. "Sonny" Smith, William R. "Bill" Smith, and Richard T. Smith.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen R. Wimmer and husband, Carl of Covington; a sister, Doris S. Humphries and husband, Toney of Covington; a brother, James R. Smith and wife, Marlene of Richardson, Texas; two grandchildren, Matthew M. Wimmer of Roanoke and Benjamin T. Wimmer of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Paul S. Brokaw officiating. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery, Clifton Forge. The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in her memory to the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, 544 Church Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
