Obituary for Walter Thurman (Butch) Hawkins, II Walter Thurman (Butch) Hawkins, II
Coast Guard Veteran Worked With MeadWestvaco

Mr. Walter Thurman (Butch) Hawkins, II, of Covington, Virginia, died Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem, VA.

He was the husband of Sharon Gilbert Hawkins.

Mr. Hawkins was born July 26, 1946 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Walter Carlisle Hawkins and Violet Evelyn "Patsy" Sorrells Hawkins.

He served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard and was honorably discharged in 1972 as an Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class.

Butch was employed by MeadWestvaco, where he worked as a first assistant on No. 1 Recovery.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Butch was an avid bowler and enjoyed reading, golfing and watching NASCAR.

Mr. Hawkins is also survived by one brother, Glenn C. Hawkins and wife, Dee of Chesterfield; one nephew, Jonathan Hawkins and wife, Danielle; one niece, Laura Hawkins; and one cousin, Loretta Keyser of Tampa, FL.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Christ United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Snider officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
