Wythe County Native Dies At Age 77

Wanda Louise Brown Kirby, 77, of Lexington, Virginia, passed away January 4, 2012, following a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Kirby, Sr., her sister, Ora Dean Nicely, and stepmother, Susie Layman S. Brown.

Wanda was born February 17, 1934 in Wythe County, a daughter of Hylas Trent Brown, Sr. and Louise Stuart Brown.

Survivors include her son, J. Arway Kirby, Jr., daughter-in-law, Carol Jean Kirby, a daughter, Vicki Carol Kirby Richardson and son-in-law, Dennis Richardson, Roanoke, VA, a brother, Hylas Trent Brown, Jr. and sister-in-law, Barbara Brown, Rocky Mount, VA, a sister, Eva Hooley and brother-in-law, Lester Hooley, Sun City Center, FL, brother-in-law Haven Nicely, Lexington, VA, sister, Gwendolyn Layman Graham, Roanoke, VA, one grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kirby was a member of the Lauderdale Associate Reform Presbyterian Church, where she was very active in the Presbyterial, and the work of the church. She also organized a Red Hat Society in Lexington.

A funeral service will be conducted 11a.m. Friday, January 6, 2012 at Harrison Funeral Home with the Rev. William Harris and the Rev. Benjamin W. Dowling, III officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.
