World War II, Korean War Veteran Was Retired From C&O Railroad

Charles Henry Hughes, age 86, of 638 Spring Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Thursday, January 19, 2012 at his residence.

He was born April 2, 1925 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, to the late Henry and Minnie Randolph Hughes.

He served in the United States Army during both World War II and the Korean War, and was retired from the transportation department of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.

He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Broady, and two sons, Charles Henry Hughes, Jr. and Samuel O'Brien Hughes.

Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Lillie Thomas Hughes of Clifton Forge; five daughters, Linda Washington and husband, Otis of Fayetteville, NC, and Wanda Davis and husband, Paul, Donna Hughes, Catherine Williams, and Jennifer Hughes, all of Clifton Forge; one son, Donald Hughes and wife, Stephanie of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Minnie Peters of Clifton Forge and Iola Jones of Plainfield, NJ; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; five sisters-in-law, Dorothy Johnson and husband, Billy, Shirley Mansfield and husband, Reverend Ed Mansfield, Carolyn Barnette and husband Reverend Matthew T. Barnette, Sr., Priscilla Thomas, and Gloria Roland and husband, Frank; three brothers-in-law, Ronnie Thomas, Norman Thomas and wife, Roberta, and Charles Thomas; and a son-in-law, Elijah Broady.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Preston Tyler officiating and Reverend Matthew T. Barnette, Sr. delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in Red Hill Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Mr. Hughes' grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family received friends on Monday afternoon from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at Nicely Funeral Home, or anytime at the residence. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O.
