Obituary for Charles Edward (Flodge) Whitmer Charles Edward (Flodge) Whitmer
Decorated World War II Veteran Was Active In His Community

Charles Edward (Flodge) Whitmer, age 85, of 1300 Woodlawn Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at his residence.

Born March 20, 1926 in Clifton Forge, Mr. Whitmer was a son of the late Charles Hostin and Virginia Mae East Whitmer.

He served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1944 aboard the heavy cruiser, USS Salt Lake City and was awarded a Distinguished Navy Service Award.

He was a charter member of the Roanoke Fifth Planning Commission, a former member of the Clifton Forge City Council 1968 - 1972, a charter member of the Clifton Forge Public Library Board, and also Quality Control Inspector, a charter member of Scott Hill, Inc. as well as Quality Control Inspector, and a charter member of Alleghany Regional Hospital Diabetic Education Program.

He worked forty-three years for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad as an electrician. Mr. Whitmer also served as Maintenance Supervisor at C & O Hospital and Alleghany Regional Hospital, was a Quality Control Inspector at Emmett Medical and Surgery Unit, was a member of the Clifton Forge Lions Club for over fifty years, an At-Large Director for the C & O Employees Hospital Association, and a member of Clifton Forge Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Alderman Whitmer, and two brothers, Frank L. Whitmer and Leon M. Whitmer.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Wayne Puglisi of Richmond; two sisters, Marguerite W. Kirk and Louise W. Griggs, both of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Mary Whitmer of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Samantha Puglisi and Sara Puglisi of Richmond; a number of nieces and nephews; special friends, Annie Sink, Harvey and Sandy Chittum, Jack Kimberlin, Bob Slusser, Jack Pate, and Brenda Graham, his neighbors of Fairview Heights; hospice nurses, Kathy Hall and Marie Dudley; and caregivers, Twila Boyd and Tammy Farren.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating. A private entombment followed in Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum, Clifton Forge. The family received friends on Tuesday morning from 11:30 a.m. until time of service at Nicely Funeral Home, or any time at the residence.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Diabetes Education Support Group, Inc., P.O. Box 7, Low Moor, VA 24457; U.S.S.
