Army World War II Veteran Was C&O Car Inspector

Booker Daniel Adkins, age 89, of 601 Commerce Avenue, Iron Gate, Virginia, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at his residence.

He was born November 22, 1922 in Iron Gate, Virginia, to the late Chesley M. and Lucy Tyree Adkins.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and worked for forty-two years for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, retiring as Car Inspector.

He was a member of Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a lifelong resident of Iron Gate.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by first wife, Nellie Morgan Adkins and second wife, Helen Nicely Adkins; two brothers, Wesley Adkins and Ashby Adkins; and three sisters, Sue Lucado, Ruth Brooks, and Geneva Wheatley.

He is survived by a daughter, Jan M. Franks and husband, John of Summerville, SC; two sons, Charles E. Adkins and wife, Jeannette of King and Queen Courthouse, and Ronnie W. Adkins of Montvale; six grandchildren, Lindsay Adkins of New Orleans, LA, Meredith Adkins of King and Queen Courthouse, Tommy Adkins of Raleigh, NC, Tony Franks and wife, Danica of Fairfax, April Christopher and husband, Josh of Easley, SC, and Dakota Adkins of Montvale; a great granddaughter, Tillman Christopher of Easley, SC; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Margaret Jeffries and Brenda Lindsay.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Louis Dodd officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Military Rites will be conducted at the graveside by members of the Burnside-Carpenter VFW Post 4299. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Dowd, Jerry Johnson, Nathan Goldberg, Wayne Lindsay, Jimmy Jeffries, Chazy Nicely, and Chris Fisher. The family received friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.
