Korean War Veteran Was Longtime Covington Fire Department Dispatcher

Charles Curtis (Chuck) Chapman, 83, of 1936 South Lee Street, Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor.

He was born November 15, 1928 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Scott Chapman and Nannie Tingler Chapman Blankenship.

Mr. Chapman served with the United States Army during the Korean War.

He retired in 1995 as a Fire Department Dispatcher with the City of Covington after more than 30 years of service to the city. He was a Life Member of the Covington Fire Department and a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Josephine Thornton Chapman of Covington; one son, Ronald C. Chapman of Covington; his "adopted daughter," Doris Lowe of Covington; two brothers, James Chapman of Clifton Forge and Henry Chapman of Newport News; one sister, Shirley Sanders of Clifton Forge, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Doug Hollenbeck officiating.

The interment will follow in Lone Star Cemetery with graveside rites being conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Pallbearers will be selected from members of the Covington Fire Department.

The Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Virginia, is handling the arrangements.
