VMI Retiree Dies At Age 73

Charles Walter Crawford, 73, of the Spring Valley area of Rockbridge County, Virginia, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center from complications of pulmonary fibrosis.

Born July 18, 1938, he was a son of the late Ott Mason Crawford and Hattie Vest Crawford.

He retired from Virginia Military Institute after 38 years of service.

Charles is survived by his wife, Suzanne Williams Crawford; a sister, Cathaline Crawford Kesler, and many nieces and nephews.

Reared in the Kerrs Creek area of Rockbridge County, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, as well as spending time with family.

He attended Old Stone Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church and was an active member of the Blue Ridge Sams Chapter of the Virginia Good Sams organization's recreational vehicle group.

A memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Old Stone Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carl Moore officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Old Stone Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church or to a charity of choice.
