World War II Veteran Served As Hammond Mitchell Shop Foreman

John Edgar Perkins, 90, of 214 Friels Drive, Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 27, 1921 in Trainer, West Virginia, a son of John Darrell and Icyphene Shifflett Perkins.

Mr. Perkins served with the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre, where he patrolled behind enemy lines.

He retired in 1992 from Hammond Mitchell, Inc, as a shop foreman.

He loved working as a logger and a farmer in the Falling Spring area for all of his life.

Mr. Perkins was a charter member of the Falling Spring Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Perkins was preceded in death by his wife, Lorretta Irene Messer Perkins in 1993; a daughter, Faye McCulley in 1982; four brothers, Odell Perkins, Gordon Perkins, Oliver Perkins and Joe Perkins; three sisters, Elizabeth Crowder, Ernestine Phillips and Emma Barnett.

Surviving are two sons and daughtersÐin- law, Leroy and Linda Perkins and Wayne and Becky Perkins, all of Covington; five grandchildren, Scott and Whitney Perkins, Abby Perkins, Kelly and Lily Perkins, Lee and Wendy Smith and Ben Perkins; five great grandchildren, Alexander Perkins, Claire Perkins and Cole Perkins; three brothers, Gene Perkins and his wife, Muriel; Tommy Perkins and his wife, Shirley and Robert Perkins and his wife, Brenda, all of Covington; one sister, Blanche Sizemore of Covington and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday , April 10, 2012 in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William M. Hartsfield officiating.

The interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Scott Perkins, Kelly Perkins, Ben Perkins, Dewey Perkins, Lee Smith and Keswick Phillips. Alternates will be John Mitchell, Donnie Paitsel, Jack Stinespring, Randall Johnson and Jerry Keyser.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mr. Perkins name may be made to Falling Spring Fire Department and Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 880, Covington, VA 24426.
