Obituary for Helen Virginia Scruggs Reese Helen Virginia Scruggs Reese
Former C&O Hospital Dietitian Dies At Age 92

Helen Virginia Scruggs Reese, age 92, of The Oaks of Lynchburg, Virginia, and formerly of Clifton Forge, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at The Oaks.

She was born September 12, 1919 in Eagle Rock, Virginia, to the late Claude H. and Bessie Lee Fairburn Scruggs.

Helen took classes at The Hospital Institution and Educational Food Service Society, and was employed as dietitian at the former C & O Hospital.

She helped set up the new Alleghany Regional Hospital Kitchen, where she was employed until her retirement as Food Service Supervisor.

She was a lifelong member of the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary and was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church, where she was in the Wesleyan Circle.

Her hobbies included baking, cooking, crocheting and cake decorating.

She was devoted to her family and friends and was the matriarch of the Scruggs family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles G. Reese in 1983; brothers, Ike Scruggs, Oscar Scruggs, Harry Scruggs, all of Clifton Forge, and James Scruggs of Gray, TN; and a sister, Mildred Hudgins of Radford.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann R. Jordan of Tomball, TX; a son, Daniel G. Reese and wife, Linda of Lynchburg; five granddaughters, Sharon Jordan and Amy Galicia of Tomball, TX, Christi Jordan Connell of Richmond, Joanna Reese of Roanoke, and Debbie Reese of Lynchburg; five great grandchildren, Bryce Jones of Houston, TX, Gabby DeLaRosa, Mya Galicia, and Zoey Galicia of Tomball, TX, and Daniel Wright of Lynchburg; two sisters, Mary Hayse of Radford and Ruth Keyser and husband, Kenny of Clifton Forge; a brother, Bobby Scruggs and wife, Faye of Clifton Forge; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends on Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to Centra Hospice, 2097 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
