Well-Known Clifton Forge Businessman Was World War II Bomber Pilot

Grover Jasper (Jack) Kimberlin, 90, of 1034 Ingalls Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died early Saturday morning, July 28, 2012 at his residence.

He was born in Clifton Forge, Virginia, on December 8, 1921, a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Elizabeth Dygert Kimberlin.

He was a retired contractor with G.C. Kimberlin and Son.

In high school be became interested in the ROTC program. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. As a pilot of a B-17 Aircraft, Jack made 35 successful bombing missions in Europe. Later in the war, he became a flight instructor of B-17 pilots.

He was instrumental in construction of many business structures and homes in the Clifton Forge area. He was owner of Kim-Stan Incorporated, owner and operator of Virginia Coal and Supply in Clifton Forge, and was former owner and operator of the Valley Ridge Water System.

Jack was a member of the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society, the Cowpasture River Preservation Association, Clifton Forge Lions Club for over 60 years, Clifton Forge Elks Club for over 50 years and the Clifton Forge Coffee Club.

Mr. Kimberlin played an active part of area government. He served on the Clifton Forge City Council for several terms and served on the Water and Sewer Commission.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4299 of Clifton Forge.

He enjoyed his farm on the Cowpasture River at Sharon. He was a friend to the Alleghany Highlands in political, economic, developmental and social aspects.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggie Taylor Brooks Kimberlin in February of 2000, and by two sons, David Randall Kimberlin in August of 1999 and Grover Edward "Eddie Bo" Kimberlin in October of 2000. He is survived by a daughter, Kimberley Ann "Kim" Wilhelm of Clifton Forge; a son, Barry Lea Brooks of Parker, Colorado; a sister, Nellie Jean Merritt and husband, Dr. Guy Merritt of Roanoke; grandchildren, Jessica Kimberlin Hammer and husband, Daniel of Bedford, Benjamin Glenn Wilhelm of Clifton Forge, Lindsay Brooks of Clifton Forge and Jarred Brooks of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; a brother-in-law, Robert E. "Toskey" Taylor and wife, Loretta of Richmond; a number of nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by special friends, Nancy and Richard Dobbs of Clifton Forge.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with Rev. W. Pembroke Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4299 of Clifton Forge. Active pallbearers will be: Rick Tabb, Garland Moore, Johnny Eanes, Benjamin Wilhelm, Jarred Brooks, Daniel Hammer, Ernie Knick and Danny Coffman. Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Chittum, Bob Slusser and Richard Dobbs.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. Friends may call at the residence of Ingalls Street at other times.
